Residential Design:
For more than twenty five years my primary focus has been the design and remodeling of family homes. While always open to other types of work, my office maintains a special interest in the personal side of design: how families relate to their homes as expressions of themselves, their values, tastes, experiences and needs. In a contemporary world dominated by impersonal utilitarian sprawl, our homes can be a treasured refuge of security, comfort, privacy and meaning.
As an antidote to the ubiquitous expansion of impersonal, inauthentic man-made environments, we still believe that a genuine commitment to time honored design processes allows us to develop buildings, places and gardens that inspire our imagination, fill our hearts and serve our physical, social and psychological needs. These fundamental needs, uniquely expressed in the individuality of each new client and site, form the creative source of our design motivations and architectural intentions.
Each client, their personal histories, experiences, processions and relationships, represents a source of authenticity that reveals and guides a uniquely creative design process. The form of each home, each living space, is born out of a fusion of practicality and magic, individual and community, mind and nature. The house then is never just building. It is a very special place where we feel at home with ourselves and at home in the world. A very special place indeed.
